U.S. CATTLE REPORT 🐂📊 October Placements Hit Record Lows — Supply Shortage Clearly Intact (Peel) 🔍
According to Derrell Peel, after a record run of cattle prices earlier in the year, the market was due for a correction. Over the past six weeks, futures and cash markets have been heavily influenced by political noise, speculation, and fear—rather than fundamentals. Peel hopes the federal government will now step back from interfering in cattle markets. The political uncertainty gave outside investors a chance to exit large long positions, with algorithmic trading likely dragging Live and Feeder futures too low. Many of these positions may reset soon, especially with chart gaps hinting at a rebound.
Peel emphasizes that market fundamentals remain strong. Government data now confirms a tight cattle supply picture: October placements were the lowest since 1996, and overall feedlot inventories continue to shrink. November 1 feedlot numbers were down 2.2% from a year ago, with no sign of relief ahead—given smaller feeder supplies, no imports from Mexico, and heifer retention underway. Fed cattle slaughter is down 5.2% year to date, with beef production down 3.6%, and 5.8% lower over the past 24 weeks. Despite heavier carcass weights, the supply shortage is clearly intact.
